Bio

Mayela Rodriguez is a practicing artist currently working and residing in Ann Arbor, Michigan. Born and raised in Santa Barbara California, Rodriguez completed her degree in Art Practice at the University of California, Berkeley in 2015 and received her M.F.A. in Art from the University of Michigan in 2019.

Through sculpture, photography, and community engagement Rodriguez’s work reimagines how we can collectively heal archival practices that intentionally or unintentionally exclude marginalized groups.

Rodriguez has shown in several galleries in the San Francisco Bay Area, Santa Barbara, CA, and Detroit, MI, including the Worth Ryder Art Gallery, the Radiance Community Center, Open i Art Space, and Popps Packing.

Community Projects

2019 Estampa Cartonera

Transforming the front of Stamps Gallery into a space reminiscent of a cartonera press, I invited the Stamps community to engage with two collections: the first, an underwhelming archive documenting the six Latina artists Stamps has invited to established programs since 2002; the second, an ever-growing accumulation of 200+ Latina artists Stamps could invite. Participants were invited to tear out pages from these collections to build their own collection of cartoneras in the adjacent workspace.

2018–Present The Latinx Library

Challenging the lack of a clearly defined Latinx studies collection within the University of Michigan Library system, The Latinx Library is an ongoing social practice project that invites the University of Michigan Latinx community to make and then exhibit their own Latinx Studies collection.
